The context
The Island Government of Saba is known for its stability and aim in maintaining good relations with the Netherlands while serving to achieve widespread and sustainable results in the various domains. Within the organization, people work together on the further development of the island. Our colleagues work on infrastructure (airport, harbor, water management), public works, planning, solid waste collection and processing, tourism, community development, health care, agriculture, HRM, ICT, finance, communication, civil affairs, legal advice, and various policy areas. In total, there are about 240 employees.
The Saba Island Government works on more self-reliance and economic development, with a focus on sustainability, accessibility, poverty eradication and improving the quality of life. Recently, the government has worked on projects such as the renovation of the airport, separation of solid waste (recycling), facilitating of a healthy lifestyle, improvement of social facilities, training, and the development of civil servants.
The position
The Garbage Truck Worker is responsible for supporting the daily collection and disposal of household, commercial, and other waste as part of the waste management team. Working closely with the truck driver, collection crew, supervisors, and other department staff, the employee helps ensure that waste is collected safely, efficiently, and according to the assigned schedule and routes. Core duties include collecting and loading garbage bins and bags, operating or assisting with the truck’s lifting equipment, keeping collection areas clean, reporting damaged bins or other issues, following health and safety procedures, maintaining cleanliness of the truck and equipment, and providing courteous service to residents and customers when required. The position plays an important role in keeping the community clean, safe, and environmentally responsible.
Tasks
- Collect garbage and waste from residential, commercial, and public areas to load onto the garbage truck.
- Check that garbage bins are properly emptied and returned to their correct locations.
- Handle waste carefully and follow health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Inspect the truck and report mechanical problems or safety issues.
- Keep the garbage truck, equipment, and work area clean.
- Wear required protective equipment, such as gloves, safety boots, and reflective clothing.
- Report missed collections, damaged bins, spills, or other problems to the supervisor.
- Assist with cleaning up waste that may fall or spill during collection.
- Follow the assigned schedule, collection routes, and instructions from supervisors.
- Provide courteous and professional service to residents and customers when needed.
- The work involves working as a team and carrying out heavy physical tasks such as bending, stooping, working in confined spaces, lifting or carrying moderately heavy items to the garbage truck for disposal.
- Performing manual labor outdoors for extended periods.
What you offer
- Physically able to carry out the tasks mentioned above, and ability to work in dusty and/or pungent working conditions.
- Possesses a proactive, motivated and flexible work attitude to get the job done within the specified time frame.
- Possesses a valid driving license C to drive large trucks and ability to drive the truck when requested.
- Flexible and willing to work early mornings, weekends, or holidays when required.
- A valid driver's license, if required for operating the garbage truck.
What we offer
Salary according to government salary scales and depending on skills and competences of the ideal candidate. This position is evaluated at scale 2, with a basic salary ranging from $1,992 through $2,632 based on a 36-hour workweek excluding 15.5% allowances, vacation allowance 8.33% and a 13th month.
